Hello, I’m the younger brother of the bride and making a speech at the reception…I have wedding speech written, I just want to know what to do before i actually deliver. How should i practice???? Any suggestions would be great!
I wrote my toast for my sister’s wedding on the train ride to the wedding. I wrote it on an envelope. I read it through a couple times.
At the reception, the best man introduced me. I started to read my toast and, two sentences into it, I burst into tears. I wasn’t scared or anything….but I was so overwhelmed with happiness and emotion. My sister came over and put her arms around me as I read the rest and we were both crying by the end.
You’d think that bursting into tears would be a downer during a maid of honor toast, but everyone kept coming up to me all evening telling me how much they loved my toast. People I didn’t even know were complimenting me on it. And all the other bridesmaids said that they had been standing in a group when I read it and they had all cried too.
So I guess my point is — you don’t really have to practice it a lot. Unless it’s really funny and you need to rehearse your zingers, it will probably just come out the way that you’re feeling on the day. If you’re nervous, you’ll be nervous. If you’re crying, you’ll be crying. The most important thing is that you’re heartfelt and honest.

My fiance and I might be doing a combined speech, but I was wondering what is usually said.
Is it a whole heap of thanks for coming. Your love and support was great. Or is there more to it then that?
If you have any examples that would be great also.
Because it is not traditional for the bride to say a speech… it is the one speech that has no rules!!! So you can say what you want, when you want!!! Just try not to repeat what others have said too much otherwise it will be boring!
I’m going to be doing one… I will be pretty much first – because I know I’ll get emotional listening to the others so best to get it out of the way! It will be something like:
"I’m not going to repeat all of the thank yous that [husband] has said on behalf of us both, but it certainly means the world to me to have you all hear. There are a couple of quick thank you’s I do want to personally add though…
1. My family (for bringing me up well… and help with wedding)
2. My husbands family (for making him the man he is)
3. My bridesmaids (just a quick thanks for putting up with me)
4. Last but not least, my husband (share a funny story from our dating and then I’ll say all of the things I love about him)
Then end with a toast to… well I haven’t worked that our yet… maybe my husband, maybe true love, or happy ever after… but a quick, "thanks once again, and please raise your glasses to XXX"
